How Small Changes and the Right Partnerships Make a Big Difference

We celebrated World Environment Day this past weekend—a day that has been recognized around the globe on June 5th since 1974. Providing a global platform, World Environment Day creates space for the public and private sectors to come together and make changes in the interest of nature and our environment.

In 2021, the call to action is to revive our damaged ecosystems. For years, we’ve used this earth. Some would argue that we’ve abused this earth. Sadly, we’ve destroyed our ecosystems (interaction between living organisms with their surroundings) at an alarmingly high rate. Our forests and coral reefs have suffered simply because we’ve deemed it “necessary” for our own benefit.

According to the United Nations, “Every three seconds, the world loses enough forest to cover a football pitch, and over the last century we have destroyed half of our wetlands. As much as 50 percent of our coral reefs have already been lost and up to 90 percent of coral reefs could be lost by 2050, even if global warming is limited to an increase of 1.5°C.”

Other staggering statistics include:

  • Over 4.7 million hectares of forests – an area larger than Denmark – are lost every year.
  • Nearly 80 percent of the world’s wastewater is discharged to our oceans and rivers without treatment.
  • Wetlands are being drained for agriculture, with some 87 percent lost globally in the last 300 years.
  • Present in more than 180 countries, peatlands are vital, super-powered ecosystems. Though they cover only 3 percent of the world’s land, they store nearly 30 percent of its soil carbon.

Small Changes, Big Difference

We can do better. In fact, we must do better. Change on this scale may seem overwhelming to some, but all change starts small … and starts with us. Here are a few activities we can do right now:

  • Educate ourselves
  • Plant a tree
  • Recycle
  • Change our diets
  • Exercise
  • Clean up parks
  • Clean up the oceans and beaches

In doing so, it’s important to focus on the here and now, and the future. Because of all the things we can do, we can neither turn back time nor change the past. But we can move forward.

It’s long past the time to stop destructive behaviors, and start reversing the damage that has already been done. With our small daily changes, we can create a community, and world, of inspiration. Those “small” changes inspire positive change at every level. For us individually, it’s deciding how and what we consume. For educators, it’s about inspiring students to take action. For businesses, it’s creating and following green initiatives. For farmers, it’s producing sustainably, and for governments, it’s investing in the future. Each of these come together to create the synergy for a better, cleaner world.

The Right Partnerships Help Bring About the Right Change

When I think about World Environment Day, I think about more than raising awareness and taking action. I also think about cycles, partnerships, and working collaboratively. For example, when we restore ecosystems, we not only help the plants and animals in that environment, but we also help ourselves thrive in a cleaner world. We even help the economy in the creation of new jobs. It truly comes full circle.

Additionally, clean living is all about the internal and external partnerships we create. Internally, we must strive always to align our mind, body, and spirit for full health benefits. Externally, we must align ourselves with nature and Planet Earth. We must also prioritize partnering with those that have the same mission and vision.

That alignment is why I choose to partner with companies like Nikken, who are committed to working together with nature, and not against it. In doing so, their products are not only good for you, but good for the world around you. To that end, Nikken has just introduced KENZEN True Elements® Marine Organic Skin Care. Kenzen means “healthy” in Japanese, which is exactly what your skin will be by using Nikken’s higher level of natural and organic ingredients.

I have also partnered with Norwex, and am thrilled to be celebrating my 4th anniversary with them in their birthday month! In honor or Norwex’s birthday, they are offering some monthly specials, including some special mystery bundles, that you don’t want to miss.

Only healthy ecosystems can lead to healthy individuals. Even making one minor shift to our daily routines today will provide major change to our environment tomorrow. Remember, we depend on ecosystems for our survival, but we shouldn’t forget that they depend on us for theirs.
