Most adults don’t get the proper amount of sleep each night. A good night of sleep should be between 7-9 hours of sleep. When you are getting ready for bed, make yourself a nightly routine that allows your body and mind to start to prepare to unwind. Put down the phone and silence your alerts. When going to sleep, you should be in a quiet, dark, cool room with no distractions. Allow your body the time it needs to rest in order to be more productive. We all know that we feel and function better with a full night of sleep behind us, but what are the actual benefits of sleep?
While you are asleep your body is resting, but your mind is still working hard for you. During sleep, your mind is processing and organizing your memories from the day. Your body needs time to go through your memories or they could be lost or could lead to inaccurate memories.
Lack of sleep can cause your body to release cortisol, a stress hormone that alerts your heart to work harder. A full night of sleep will decrease the release of cortisol, allowing your heart to work properly and powerfully.
A proper night of sleep with at least 7 hours can give your immune cells and proteins the strength they need to fight off whatever comes their way. It can also make vaccines more effective by allowing them to work properly through your system while you sleep.
If you don’t get enough sleep your body produces a hormone called ghrelin that boosts your appetite. On the other hand, your body will decrease the production of leptin, a hormone that tells your body you’re full. In addition, when you don’t get enough sleep you become more stressed and won’t have the energy to fight off junk food cravings.
A good night of sleep will allow you to wake up feeling energized and fully rested. This will improve your ability to be more patient and less angry as the obstacles of the day come your way.
